Loaded induction motors rotate at a frequency slightly slower than the synchronous frequency (the frequency of the rotating magnetic field which couples to the rotor and causes rotation). The difference between the actual rotational frequency and the synchronous frequency is referred to as the slip frequency. In the vibration spectrum, there will often be sidebands, spaced by the slip frequency, on either side of the synchronous frequency.
